Please find attached an update on the pigeon mortality investigation in Western Australia. I've detailed below a summary of the current situation in Victoria.
A disease outbreak affecting racing pigeons in Victoria was reported in late December 2016 following a pigeon sale in Kyabram in the north of the state
Birds in affected lofts demonstrate vomiting, develop green diarrhoea and assume a hunched posture. All sick birds die usually within 12 to 24 hours. Death will continue for approximately 7 days
Affected lofts have experienced mortality rates of approximately 30%
Similar outbreaks have been reported over the last 6 months in Western Australia and South Australia
Samples of liver tissue from affected pigeons originating from Western and South Australia have presented identical findings
Reovirus has been confirmed as the causative agent
